New co-production Opéra Orchester national Montpellier Occitanie and Ensemble Artaserse, Arcal national opera and musical theater company. An opera in three acts, featuring a libretto by Aurelio Aureli based on the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. Premiered at the Teatro San Salvatore in Venice in 1672.
A shimmering ballet of loving bodies and hearts carried by the beauty of the music, Antonio Sartorio's Orfeo alternates sensual, pathetic, comic and tragic atmospheres. Taking the opposite view of Monteverdi, the composer presents us with a possessive and suspicious Orpheus, who doubts the love of Eurydice struggling to keep her love and her life. It is she herself who returns as a ghost to ask Orpheus to deliver her from the Underworld. Fifteen years after Il sant'Alessioby Stefano Landi, this fascinating production celebrates the reunion of director Benjamin Lazar and Philippe Jaroussky. Following them, they lead the spectator into the garden of madness of Orpheus, these intermediate spaces between life and death, past and present where Orpheus and Eurydice constantly seek and lose each other eternally.
